Pork Sandwich

Pork Sandwich  (website)

More than just a delicious food, Pork Sandwich is an open source tool (packaged as a ruby gem) for pulling and storing many types of Twitter data, including tweets, user info, and friend/follower graph data. Unfortunately, development on the project has come to a halt. Such is life.

Social Wargaming

Social Wargaming  (website)

I helped design and acted as referee for the first ever social wargame. In the first game, teams were given a list of unknowing target users on Twitter and competed to covertly reshape the existing graph of friendship connections between these users. By studying the strategies employed in and the results of this type of game and others, we hope to learn more about the nature of friendship and influence online.

Web Ecology Project

Web Ecology Project  (website)

I was lead researcher and developer at the Web Ecology Project, an interdisciplinary research group focused on using data mining techniques to analyze the system-wide flows of culture and community online. In addition to publishing reports that test the limits of existing social science methodology, we developed and shared research tools meant to help other aspiring web ecologists.

Good Play Project

Good Play Project  (website)

I've worked as a research assistant on the GoodPlay Project, a Macarthur Foundation-funded research initiative led by Howard Gardner at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. We studied how young people think about and deal with ethical issues online through in-depth qualitative interviews. I've helped design the research, collect and analyze data, and develop curricular materials based on our findings.
